Plant care guide
Giant white bird of paradise
Strelitzia nicolai · Strelitziaceae
A large, clumping tropical perennial with broad, banana-like leaves. Grow it in bright light to full sun, with rich, well-draining soil and consistent moisture during active growth. Protect from frost and strong drying winds; outdoor plants need room to spread.
Plant care
- Light
- Bright indirect light indoors; outdoors, full sun to partial shade. Acclimate gradually to intense sun.
- Watering
- Water deeply about once weekly in warm, active growth, adjusting for rainfall, heat, and soil drainage. Reduce in cool weather. Check the soil 5–7 cm (2–3 in) below the surface with a finger or trowel. Water when that layer feels dry, then allow excess water to drain fully.
- Soil
- Rich, fertile, well-draining soil amended with compost. Avoid persistently waterlogged ground.
- Humidity
- Average to high humidity; protect from very dry indoor air when possible.
- Temperature
- Warm conditions preferred, roughly 18–30°C (65–86°F). Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
- Toxicity
- Mildly toxic if eaten; ingestion may cause gastrointestinal upset. Keep away from pets and children.
