How to propagate Madagascar dragon tree

Dracaena marginata · Asparagaceae

Dracaena marginata is most reliably propagated from stem cuttings. Use healthy cane sections or leafy stem tips, keep them warm in bright indirect light, and avoid constantly wet media. Rooting is gradual, often taking several weeks.

Difficulty
Easy
Best time
Late spring through summer, when the plant is actively growing. Indoor propagation is possible year-round if warmth and light are adequate.

Propagation methods

Stem-tip cuttings

Producing a new plant with an already leafy top and a single upright stem.

  1. Choose a healthy leafy stem tip and cut it cleanly about 8–15 cm below the leaves.
  2. Remove the lowest leaves, leaving a bare section of stem to insert into the medium. Keep several leaves at the top.
  3. Allow the cut surface to dry for a few hours in a shaded place; this is optional but can reduce the risk of rot.
  4. Insert the bare stem 2–5 cm deep into a small pot of well-draining, lightly moist propagation mix, such as potting mix amended with perlite or coarse material.
  5. Firm the mix gently so the cutting stands upright. Do not bury the leaves.
  6. Place in bright, indirect light at about 18–29°C. Keep the medium slightly moist but not soggy, allowing the surface to dry somewhat between waterings.
  7. Water only when needed and empty excess water from the pot or saucer.

Cane cuttings

Propagating several plants from a tall, bare, or pruned cane.

  1. Cut a healthy cane into sections about 5–10 cm long. Each section should have at least one visible growth point, such as a node or leaf scar.
  2. Keep track of which end was originally uppermost; planting sections upside down can prevent normal growth.
  3. Allow the cut sections to dry for a few hours in a shaded place.
  4. Place each section upright with its lower end inserted about 1–3 cm into lightly moist, well-draining mix. Alternatively, lay the section horizontally on the surface and press it in slightly, keeping growth points oriented upward.
  5. Keep the medium just lightly moist, never waterlogged, in bright indirect light and warm conditions.
  6. Once new shoots and roots are established, transplant carefully into individual pots if the cuttings were started together.

Aftercare

  • Keep newly rooted plants in bright, indirect light and protect them from intense midday sun.
  • Water when the upper part of the mix has dried somewhat; provide thorough drainage.
  • After active growth begins, move the plant into a well-draining houseplant mix in a pot with drainage holes.
  • Avoid heavy feeding until the cutting is clearly rooted and producing new growth; then use a dilute balanced houseplant fertilizer during active growth if desired.
  • Maintain temperatures near 18–29°C and protect young plants from temperatures below about 12°C and cold drafts.
  • Keep propagated plants away from cats and dogs, since Dracaena marginata may cause oral irritation, drooling, or stomach upset if chewed.
