Propagation guide
How to propagate Peace lily
Spathiphyllum sp. · Araceae
Peace lilies (Spathiphyllum) are most reliably propagated by division of the clump. Separate naturally rooted sections during repotting, then pot each section in a loose, well-draining mix and keep it evenly moist in bright, indirect light.
- Difficulty
- Moderate
- Best time
- Spring or early summer, when active growth supports quicker recovery.
Propagation methods
Division of a rooted clump
Established peace lilies with multiple crowns or dense growth at the base.
- Water the plant lightly a day before dividing so the root ball is easier to handle, but do not make the soil soggy.
- Slide the plant from its pot and gently remove enough soil to see the crowns and roots.
- Look for separate leafy crowns arising from the base. Choose sections that have their own roots; each division should ideally have several healthy leaves and a firm root portion.
- Tease the crowns apart with your fingers. If roots are tightly joined, use a clean, sharp knife to make a careful cut between crowns while preserving roots on both sections.
- Discard dead, black, or mushy roots and remove damaged leaves with clean scissors.
- Pot each division at the same depth it was previously growing in, using a loose, well-draining indoor potting mix and a container with drainage holes.
- Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain, then place in bright, indirect light away from harsh sun and cold drafts.
- Keep the mix evenly moist but not waterlogged while the division re-establishes. Reduce watering if the plant is not using water quickly.
Aftercare
- Keep newly divided plants in bright, indirect light; lower light may slow recovery and flowering.
- Maintain temperatures around 18–29°C and protect plants from drafts or temperatures below about 13°C.
- Do not fertilize until the division shows fresh growth, then resume a normal, diluted houseplant feeding routine if desired.
- Expect some temporary leaf droop after division. Remove leaves that yellow completely, but do not remove healthy foliage unnecessarily.
- Repot only when roots have re-established and the plant is actively growing.
