Plant care guide
Anita dracaena or pleomele
Dracaena reflexa · Asparagaceae
A tropical, cane-forming evergreen with narrow, arching leaves clustered around branching stems. This appears to be a narrow-leaved green form often sold as ‘Anita’. It tolerates normal indoor conditions but grows best with bright filtered light, careful watering, and good drainage.
Plant care
- Light
- Bright, indirect light is best; tolerates medium light. Avoid harsh midday sun, which may scorch the foliage.
- Watering
- Typically every 1–2 weeks indoors, less often during cool or low-light periods. Move aside the bark and test the actual potting mix several centimeters deep. Water thoroughly only when the upper 5–7 cm (2–3 in) is dry, then let excess water drain completely.
- Soil
- Loose, well-draining indoor potting mix amended with perlite or fine bark; the container must have drainage holes.
- Humidity
- Average household humidity is usually adequate; moderate humidity and airflow are beneficial.
- Temperature
- 18–29°C (65–85°F); protect from temperatures below about 13°C (55°F), cold drafts, and sudden temperature changes.
- Toxicity
- Toxic to cats and dogs if chewed, potentially causing vomiting, drooling, appetite loss, or weakness.
