African mask plant
Alocasia (likely Alocasia × amazonica) · Araceae
A young Alocasia with a strongly veined, arrow-shaped leaf. The exact cultivar is uncertain from one image, but its foliage and exposed tuberous roots fit an Alocasia-type houseplant.
Plant care
- Light
- Bright, indirect light; gentle morning sun is acceptable. Avoid harsh midday sun.
- Watering
- Usually about weekly in active growth, less often in winter; timing depends on pot size and conditions. Press a finger 2–4 cm into the mix. Water when that layer is mostly dry, then drain thoroughly; do not leave the pot standing in water.
- Soil
- Loose, chunky, well-draining aroid mix with bark, perlite, and coco coir or peat. Use a pot with drainage holes.
- Humidity
- Preferably 50–70% or higher, with good air circulation.
- Temperature
- Warm conditions, ideally 18–29°C; protect from cold drafts and temperatures below about 15°C.
- Toxicity
- Toxic if chewed, causing irritation; keep away from pets and children.
