Monstera
Monstera spp. · Araceae
A group of tropical climbing or vining aroids commonly grown for their large, often fenestrated leaves. The term “monstera” usually refers to the genus rather than one specific species.
Plant care
- Light
- Bright, indirect light; some gentle morning or evening sun is acceptable. Avoid intense direct midday sun.
- Watering
- Water approximately every 1–2 weeks indoors, adjusting for light, temperature, pot size, and season. Water when the top 2–5 cm (1–2 in) of soil feels dry. Water thoroughly and let excess drain; do not leave the pot standing in water.
- Soil
- Loose, well-draining, moisture-retentive mix such as potting soil with orchid bark and perlite.
- Humidity
- Moderate to high humidity is preferred, ideally around 50–70%, though established plants can tolerate average indoor humidity.
- Temperature
- Prefer 18–29°C (65–85°F); protect from cold drafts and temperatures below about 13°C (55°F).
- Toxicity
- Toxic if chewed or ingested because it contains calcium oxalate crystals; keep away from pets and children.
