Plant care guide

Foxtail agave

Agave attenuata · Asparagaceae

A smooth-edged, spineless agave forming a rosette of soft green leaves. Older plants develop a short, ringed trunk, while young offsets have narrower, more upright leaves. The photos appear consistent with a young offset and a mature specimen.

Plant care

Light
Bright light to full or partial sun. Acclimate gradually before moving into strong direct sun.
Watering
Approximately every 2–4 weeks during warm growth, and much less often in cool weather. Wait until the potting mix is dry nearly to the bottom. Check with a wooden skewer or finger through the drainage hole, then water thoroughly and empty the saucer.
Soil
Very fast-draining succulent mix amended generously with pumice, perlite, or coarse grit; always use a pot with drainage holes.
Humidity
Normal household or outdoor humidity; avoid persistently damp, poorly ventilated conditions.
Temperature
Best around 15–29°C (59–84°F); protect from frost and prolonged cold, wet conditions.
Toxicity
Sap can irritate skin, and ingestion may cause gastrointestinal upset in people and pets. Handle damaged leaves with gloves.
